Tips for First-Time Visitors

UK citizens visiting the USA for tourism or business for up to 90 days under the Visa Waiver Program (VWP) MUST obtain an approved Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) online before travelling. Apply via the official ESTA website (cost is currently US$21). Applications are usually approved quickly but apply at least 72 hours before departure, ideally earlier. An approved ESTA is typically valid for two years or until your passport expires. Without it, you won't be allowed to board your flight.

ESTA is Essential (Apply Early!)

This is a major cultural difference. Tipping service staff is expected and essential in the USA, as many rely on tips for a significant portion of their income. Budget for it! Standard guidelines:

  • Restaurants (table service): 15-20% of the pre-tax bill (20% is common for good service).
  • Bartenders: $1-2 per drink or 15-20% of the bar tab.
  • Taxi/Rideshare drivers: 15-20%.
  • Hotel porters: $1-5 per bag.
  • Hotel housekeeping: $2-5 per day (leave daily).

Tipping Culture is Crucial (Factor it In!)

Remember to drive on the RIGHT. Rental cars are almost always automatic transmission (easy once you're used to it – left foot does nothing!). A key rule difference: In most states, unless a sign prohibits it, you can turn right at a red traffic light after coming to a complete stop and ensuring the way is clear. Distances are vast – check journey times, not just miles. Fuel is sold by the US gallon (smaller than UK gallon) and is generally cheaper than in the UK.

Driving Differences (Right Side, Automatics, Right on Red)

Be aware that displayed prices in shops and on menus usually do not include sales tax. Tax is added at the checkout/till and varies by state and city (typically 5-10%). Also, be prepared for large food portion sizes in many restaurants – sharing dishes or asking for a 'to-go box' for leftovers is perfectly normal!

Sales Tax & Portion Sizes (What You See Isn't Final Price!)
