Your Guide to Greece

Imagine standing where philosophers once debated, beneath the majestic Acropolis in Athens. Picture yourself gazing across a volcanic caldera at sunset from a whitewashed village in Santorini, or diving into crystal-clear turquoise waters off a secluded beach on a remote island. Greece offers this incredible blend of profound history, steeped in myth and legend, alongside the idyllic beauty of its thousands of islands scattered across the Aegean and Ionian Seas. It’s a country that captivates with its ancient wonders, stunning natural landscapes, vibrant culture, and famously warm welcome -Philoxenia.

For first-time visitors from the UK, Greece often means exploring the historical treasures of Athens followed by hopping to one or two well-known islands like Crete, Rhodes, Corfu, Mykonos, or Santorini. But for returners, the possibilities are endless: discovering lesser-known island chains like the Sporades or the Dodecanese, exploring the diverse landscapes and archaeological sites of the Peloponnese peninsula or mainland regions like Meteora, hiking Crete's Samaria Gorge, sailing between secluded coves, or simply finding your personal favourite taverna on a quiet island beach. Greece invites endless exploration.

Flights: Numerous airlines, including British Airways, Aegean Airlines (Greece's flag carrier), EasyJet, Ryanair, Jet2, and TUI, operate flights from many UK airports (London and regional) to Greece. Direct flights are abundant, especially during the summer season (roughly April-October). Key airports include:

  • Athens International Airport (ATH): The main gateway to Greece, serving the capital and acting as the crucial hub for domestic flights connecting to the islands. Direct UK flights operate year-round.

These include Heraklion (HER) and Chania (CHQ) on Crete, Rhodes (RHO), Corfu (CFU), Kos (KGS), Zakynthos (ZTH), Kefalonia (EFL), Santorini (JTR), Mykonos (JMK), Skiathos (JSI), and others.

Official Spoken Languages

The official language is Greek, with its own beautiful and ancient alphabet. However, you'll find that English is widely spoken and understood in almost all areas frequented by tourists – islands, Athens, major sites, hotels, restaurants, shops. Younger Greeks, in particular, usually have excellent English skills.

That said, Greeks are incredibly proud of their language and culture, and greatly appreciate visitors making an effort with a few basic phrases. It's a key part of experiencing Greek hospitality (philoxenia):

Weather & Climate

For the best combination of pleasant weather for both sightseeing and island enjoyment, aim for late Spring (May-June) or early Autumn (September-early October). If guaranteed hot beach weather is the priority, July and August deliver, but expect peak crowds and prices. Winter is great for uncrowded Athens sightseeing but not suitable for an island holiday.

Savour Greek Food & Hospitality

Embrace the delicious Mediterranean diet! Enjoy meals leisurely, often shared amongst family and friends. Experience genuine Greek hospitality (philoxenia). Try local wines, the anise-flavoured spirit ouzo (usually diluted with water), or a refreshing frappé (iced instant coffee).

Tips for First-Time Visitors

While hopping between islands sounds romantic, it needs logistical planning. Ferries are key, but schedules can change, and weather (especially the summer 'Meltemi' wind in the Aegean) can cause delays or cancellations. Check ferry routes and timings well in advance using sites like Ferryhopper. Book high-speed ferries or cabins on overnight routes ahead, especially in summer. Don't try to cram too many islands into a short trip – allow for travel time and potential disruptions.

Island Hopping Requires Planning & Flexibility

Keep an eye out for the ubiquitous street kiosks called 'periptera' (περίπτερα). These little huts, often open late, sell almost everything you might need in a pinch: cold drinks, water, snacks, cigarettes, newspapers, bus tickets, phone top-up cards, aspirin, sunscreen, etc. They are incredibly convenient!

The Mighty 'Periptero'

Traditional Greek coffee ('ellinikós kafés') is strong, brewed in a 'briki', and served with the grounds at the bottom – let them settle! Specify sweetness: 'skétos' (plain), 'métrios' (medium), 'glykós' (sweet). In summer, iced coffees rule! The classic 'Frappé' (frothy iced instant coffee) is still around, but more popular now are 'Freddo Espresso' (iced espresso, often lightly sweetened) and 'Freddo Cappuccino' (iced espresso topped with cold frothed milk). Perfect for hot afternoons!

Greek Coffee Culture & Iced Coffee Mania

While credit/debit cards are widely accepted in cities, larger hotels, restaurants, and shops in popular tourist areas, carrying Euro (€) cash is essential in Greece. Smaller tavernas (especially in villages or less touristy islands), local shops, markets, taxis, buses, and paying for small items like drinks or snacks often require cash. ATMs are available in towns and larger villages, but might be scarce on very small islands – plan accordingly.

Cash is Still King
